Treasures of Nature

Experience Istria's nature

Istrian hinterland offers true gourmet treasures, so it is not surprising that so many of them are a mainstay ingredient in traditional recipes.
They are each valuable on their own. What they do have in common is that they have all grown under our sun and have been sprinkled by our sea salt.
Discover Istria's trump cards: award winning olive oil, medicinal garlic, prestigious truffles, asparagus – the best source of folic acid and antioxidants, sweet persimmon (kaki) and autochthonous Strunjan artichokes.
Olive oil

Olive oil

Extra virgin olive oil, as made by numerous olive oil makers in Koper, has a typical gold-green texture and an exceptional smell and taste, making it an unmissable ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine. It is often referred to as »liquid gold«, due to its many beneficial properties.
Garlic

Garlic

The autochthonous Istrian garlic can be recognised by its red skin and large red healthy cloves. It holds a special place in the Istrian kitchen. One of the biggest specialties are "peski" – the green scapes of young garlic.

Istrian hinterland's foods have a taste of tradition, dating back to the times of our grandmas who prepared them with such love. They loved nature but most of all, they loved the people they made food for.
We suggest you try a little bit of everything! Enjoy as much as your tummy allows… A delicious fritaja with asparagus for breakfast, bobiči or homemade gnocchi for lunch and fuži with truffles for dinner.
