TOP 3 places worth visiting in Slovenian Istria

1. Istrian countryside, villages, and hamlets

The Istrian countryside is perfect for those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy peace and unspoiled nature. Villages and hamlets, such as Padna and Korte, enchant with their old charm, pleasant locals, and picturesque landscape.

Padna is an ancient Istrian village where stone houses cluster together, surrounding the village church of St. Blaise. Next to the church stands a 26-meter-high stone bell tower, built by the locals in 1885. As you stroll through the narrow stone streets, admire the village houses, and immerse yourself in the charms of the past, which are still very much alive in this idyllic place, it seems as if time has stood still. In the village, locals open their doors every year at the end of April and invite you to the traditional Olive Oil and Chard Festival. Here you can taste homemade olive oil, healthy farm produce, and traditional Istrian dishes.
On the neighbouring hill stands the charming Istrian village of Korte, which is a true gem of the Izola countryside. Here, you can visit water sources, explore the archaeological park Kašler, or indulge in wine tasting at one of the local wineries. Korte is an excellent starting point for various hiking trails through the Istrian countryside. In an especially interesting way, you can discover this village through an exclusive experience Explore the countryside of Izola with a local, where you completely immerse yourself in getting to know the place with people who have been living there forever.

2. Dragonja River Valley

We know Istria for its coastline, so many are unaware that one of the most beautiful natural landmarks lies here - the Dragonja River Valley. "Among my favorite spots, I would especially like to highlight the Dragonja River Valley, where I often enjoy nature, freshwater, and tranquillity."
The Dragonja River, about 30 kilometers long, forms the border between Slovenia and Croatia and serves as a natural connection between the Karst Plateau, the flysch Istria, and the Adriatic Sea. A characteristic of the river is that it doesn't have a single source but several smaller ones. Some argue that Dragonja got its name because of its winding nature (meanders) - the name is said to come from the Italian word "drago" (dragon), as the river winds like a dragon. The lower part of the valley, where it flows into the sea, is shaped into a plain on which the Sečovlje Saltpans stand - yet another unique attraction of Slovenian Istria. The Dragonja River Valley offers sanctuary to those seeking refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and wishing to discover the true beauty of the pristine nature of Slovenian Istria.

3. Izola and its beautiful beaches

However, we cannot overlook Izola, where Matic has made his new home. Izola, a former fishing town, delights with its picturesque old town and wonderful beaches. In addition to the colorful streets and historical landmarks such as the Besenghi Palace, the Church of St. Maurus, and Manzioli Square, visitors can also indulge in culinary delights here. The city hosts various culinary events each year, such as the Pier of Tastes and the Festival of Olives, Wine, and Fish, where local restaurateurs showcase seasonal, primarily seafood flavors. "Izola is truly an ideal destination for those seeking the perfect blend of authentic urban vibes and seaside pleasures.”
Locals are also proud of the abundance of diverse beaches and relaxation options, allowing visitors to bask in the sunny rays. "My favorite beaches are the wild beaches of Bele Skale and Moon Bay; I recommend visitors to explore them with a stand-up paddleboard or kayak.” You can rent a stand-up paddleboard at the Izola Tourist Information Center.
An unforgettable experience also includes a hiking trip to the pristine beaches of the Strunjan Nature Park, where you can find both Bele Skale Beach and the Moon Bay. The beaches can also be visited in winter when they are slightly less crowded, offering space for relaxation and rejuvenation. While in the park, continue your journey to the Strunjan Saltpans, ascend to the Strunjan Cross, and step onto the top of the majestic cliff.
